WHAT IS A TORSION SPRING?

A torsion spring is a type of spring that operates by twisting. It works by receiving torque (twisting force) and generating a reaction force to resist angular displacement.

Unlike compression springs (which handle compressive force) or extension springs (which handle tensile force), torsion springs are designed to withstand rotational force around their axis.

🔹 1. Structure

• Formed as a helical coil, typically cylindrical
• Two ends are shaped into legs (arms) to transmit torque
• Various leg designs: straight, right-angle, L-shaped, U-shaped, loop (O-shape), or custom forms

🔹 2. Working Principle

When the spring legs are rotated around the coil axis => the spring stores elastic energy.

When the force is released => the spring returns to its original position, generating a restoring torque.

=> Simply put: it resists twisting force.

• Opening/closing mechanisms: door hinges, car trunk lids, folding tables
• Return to original position: clothespins, mousetraps, levers
• Angular stabilization: mechanical shafts, clocks
• Sports & agricultural tools: harvesters, shredders, pruning tools

🔹 4. Advantages & Disadvantages

Advantages:

• Precise angular response
• Compact structure
• Capable of generating high force with long lever arms

Disadvantages:

• Spring legs may deform under overload
• Limited working angle (typically 30- 360°)
• Requires high-quality materials for fatigue resistance
