HOW TO IDENTIFY LOW-QUALITY SPRINGS

Springs are critical components used in mechanical systems, household appliances, industrial machinery, and electronic devices. Low-quality springs can reduce performance, cause noise, wear out quickly, or even lead to safety risks. Identifying poor-quality springs early helps businesses minimize risks and optimize maintenance and replacement costs.

1. Rough, Rusted, or Uneven Surface

Low-quality springs often show:

  • Scratched, rough, or uneven surface
  • Micro-cracks or weak points
  • Uneven or peeling coating
  • Rust spots even before long-term use

Cause: Low-grade steel, poor surface treatment, or lack of proper coating.

2. Unstable Elastic Force

Poor-quality springs often have weak or inconsistent force.

Signs:

  • Same batch but different tension/compression force
  • Rapid loss of elasticity after a few thousand cycles
  • Spring becomes "loose" and loses restoring force

A high-quality spring must maintain stable stiffness (k) and recovery ability.

3. Dimensional Inaccuracy

Common deviations include:

  • Wire diameter deviation >= ±0.2 mm
  • Inconsistent length
  • Uneven pitch
  • Deformed outer diameter
  • Axial misalignment

These issues lead to improper fitting, inaccurate operation, and reduced lifespan.

4. Uneven or Deformed Coils

Often caused by low-quality machines or unskilled operation:

  • Uneven coil spacing
  • Improper or non-parallel spring ends
  • Spring bends or cannot stand straight on a flat surface

This results in poor force distribution and higher risk of deformation or breakage.

5. Non-Standard Steel Material

Low-quality springs may use:

  • Incorrect steel grade
  • Recycled steel with high impurities
  • Improper heat treatment

Consequences:

  • Easy breakage
  • Insufficient hardness
  • Poor fatigue resistance
  • High oxidation risk

6. No Certification or Testing Before Delivery

Quality springs must be tested for:

  • Compression/tension force
  • Dimensions
  • Material hardness
  • Number of coils
  • Load capacity

If the supplier lacks testing equipment, reports, or standards => high risk of poor quality.

7. Weak Hooks or Spring Ends

For extension and torsion springs:

  • Improper hook forming or welding
  • Thin, uneven hooks
  • Cracked or deformed ends

These defects can cause hook failure, which is extremely dangerous under high loads.

8. Noise and Vibration During Operation

Noise indicates:

  • Poor heat treatment
  • Coil friction
  • Axial misalignment
  • Uneven pitch

High-quality springs operate smoothly with minimal vibration.

CONCLUSION

Low-quality springs can be identified by:

  • Poor surface condition or rust
  • Weak or inconsistent elasticity
  • Dimensional inaccuracies
  • Deformed or uneven coils
  • Low-grade steel
  • Lack of quality testing
  • Weak hooks or poor finishing
  • Noisy and unstable operation

Choosing a reputable manufacturer with modern CNC machines and strict quality control is essential for durability and safety.
